The Simulation Centre for Health Learning: Continued Leadership in Women’s Health

Lois Hole Hospital for WomenSince the earliest days of planning, the vision for the Lois Hole Hospital for Women has been consistent: Build the best women’s hospital in Canada.

And since its opening in May 2010, the Lois Hole Hospital for Women has fast established itself as a centre of women’s health excellence.

Today, the Lois Hole Hospital for Women offers leading-edge diagnosis, treatment and care to women of all ages and in all stages of life. It is home to state-of-the-art technologies, specialized programs, innovative clinics, ground-breaking research, and some of the most respected women’s health professionals in the world.

As part of its commitment to continued leadership in women’s health, and through its partnership with the Royal Alexandra Hospital Foundation, the creation of a Simulation Centre for Health Learning has been identified as the next, innovative step in the evolution of this preeminent centre of excellence.

The Simulation Centre for Health Learning

Practice Improvement CentreThe first hospital-based simulation centre in Alberta, the Simulation Centre for Health Learning will be a state-of-the-art classroom that replicates medical scenarios across a broad spectrum of events using sophisticated simulation technology.

This advanced technology is brought to life – quite literally – through human-realistic dolls. Known as Simulators, these robotic patients imitate the conditions, responses, and infinite variables of the human body and bring astounding realism to the training sessions.

Because many different kinds of medical scenarios can be enacted within the Simulation Centre for Health Learning, medical and nursing personnel are able to gain valuable experience across a wide range of issues, including high-risk, infrequently experienced emergency events.

In this way, the Centre will allow teams of healthcare professionals to increase readiness, build communication skills, coordinate action, and ultimately, enhance their ability to deliver world-class patient safety.

They will also improve their ability to effectively and compassionately work with patients. That’s because the Simulation Centre for Health Learning represents a tremendous opportunity to continually enhance the quality of care provided at the Lois Hole Hospital for Women, as well as its efficiency.

Through interactions with the robotic patients, medical and nursing personnel will strengthen their ability to relate and respond to the needs of living patients. Diverse medical enactments will encourage increased sensitivity, empathy, and unsurpassed professionalism. And for the women who receive treatment at the Lois Hole Hospital for Women, the result will be more comprehensive, patient-centred care and a more dignified healthcare experience.

Our Goal

Our dedicated team of volunteers, supported by fundraisers at the Royal Alexandra Hospital Foundation, is committed to raising $1,500,000 towards the Centre’s implementation. This first phase of fundraising will lay the foundation for the Centre’s creation by providing funding for technology and infrastructure needs.

Donating toward this new training centre is an investment in realism, an investment in enhanced training for inter-professional teams, and an investment in improved health outcomes for women and children.

The creation of the new Simulation Centre for Health Learning represents the Lois Hole Hospital for Women’s commitment to continued innovation and builds on the Hospital’s leadership in specialized gynecologic care and high-risk obstetrics.
